Ch’ortí Language School

Currently, 247 Ch’ortí Maya are enrolled through CONIMCHH as students in the magistero (teaching credential) program at the San Rafael School in Copán Ruinas.  In addition to the standard curriculum, students take intensive Ch’orti’ language classes due to their desire to learn and revive their lenga materna or mother language.  These classes represent an important part of the CONIMCHH cultural recovery initiative and enjoy substantial popularity.

In 2010, CONIMCHH finished construction on their new language school, Templo del Sol (Temple of the Sun), located in the town of Corralito.  Completion of this school serves as an important resource for future Ch’orti’ speakers and the cultural heritage of the region.
